 | 10:59 am - we like to pick fights!
The gym buddy and I are both huge fans of combat classes, and would try to go at least once a week. If I recall correctly, she signed up for membership at around the same time I finally decided after years of just using the machines, to give the class a shot, and was a convert since then. Initially, we would just whack any class on the gym schedule, as long as it fits our schedule, and since we were still picking up the various moves, it didn't much of a difference which instructor was conducting the class. Over time, as we picked up the moves, we started to pay more attention to the finer details, like the pace and choreography, and have our favourites and um, not so favourites. Haa. These days, we would even miss out on classes even if we can make it, concluding that it will be a waste of our limited time, which will only feel "no kick" and that we would be better off doing a long run or machines by ourselves using that time. Like, for now, our favourite instructor is J, because of his fun personality and cos his classes always guarantee tender muscles the day after. W is a close second, only because he matches the intensity of J but is not as gregarious. Then on the other end of the spectrum is L, whose classes are very much like drills, which would suit beginners and people trying to perfect their moves, but not so gratifying for peeps who simply go to class for the adrenaline and exertion - like us. :p Oh, and right at the bottom of our scale is T, whose classes are a yawn, with the worst part being that she clearly lacks stamina to even last through the class, sometimes even whinging for the class to "slow down" for her! O_O Heh, yes we exchange notes on our classes and delight that we share the same preferences and favourites. ;p I love how we are almost like "fitness soulmates" - almost because we do differ in some of our preferences - she's a complete sun worshipper, and derives great joy from running in the hot sun, while I tend to prefer jogs in cool breezy weather, with excess heat sapping my energy and making me a grumpy runner. And while I love my swims and can happily do 30-40 laps easily, she tends to get bored from the monotony of swims and hop out of the pool after 20 laps. We've come a long way, from being the rookie combateers to the rather seasoned ones who can follow the various sequences with reasonable ease, and even be picky on which classes to attend. Love that I had her as my partner in this journey. ; ) Current Mood: accomplished

 | 06:01 pm - Big Sur 2012: Wonderful hikes Big Sur is a fabulous place for hiking and that's the main activity that we did on the second day of our stay. We checked out three different locations namely Pfeiffer Beach, Andrew Molera State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
Each of the location has its own appeal and Stvn and I loved our experience at Andrew Molera SP the most. Pfeiffer Beach is an unspoiled and gorgeous beach and what is most special about it is that it has purple sand. We didn't have much company there and it was really peaceful as we stood and watched the waves ebb and flow, witnessing the wonder of nature. It was a good start to our day as the hike was relatively easy. We moved on to Andrew Molera and this was a much longer hike and we were rewarded with splendid view at the highest point. At Pfeiffer Big Sur, SP we checked out a waterfall as well as the a vista point that offers a great view of the valley.
Andrew Molera SP - I look so tiny as Stvn took the picture from the other side.

 | 05:55 pm - Kids' Art Village Earlier this week, I took half a day off work and brought Sean to check out the Kids' Arts Village which is part of the Singapore Arts Festival held at Esplanade Park. It was our first time there and boy, did we have a lot of fun!

We started out with UV Art where Sean coloured a mask made out of recycled paper with fluorescent highlighters. We then brought it to a darkened room decked out with UV lights to see the mask glow in the dark. Sean was pretty amused. Such a cute and simple idea!

Then we moved on to a station to make a hat out of recycled leaflets. I made a crown for Sean, like the one Max wears in Where the Wild Things are. He insisted on wearing it with his green sunnies :)

It was a super warm afternoon and I could tell Sean was fast wilting in the heat. He only perked up when we dropped by the 'Splash Art' corner and saw all the messy, colourful messy activities. We spent AGES here because Sean didn’t want to leave!
He flung sponges soaked in paint on the wall. He spray-painted a huge canvas using a Super Soaker gun. We were both splattered head to toe in paint flecks when we were done (and I totally regretted my decision to wear my brand new white tee that day)! The young girls mending the station thought Sean was very cute because he was one of the younger kids and they were very sweet to him :)

I eventually had to drag him away coz I didn’t want to miss Tangle. Tangle is this huge interactive art installation where the kids are given a big ball of elastic ribbon to wind and weave any way they pleased. They give out different colour ribbons at each sessions (ours was black and red) so few days in, you get this crazy colourful spider web of ribbons! Fun even for adults!
There were also these animated characters going around to interact with the kids – one of them kept playing peekaboo with Sean making him laugh.
I didn't want to overwhelm Sean so we stuck to the safe baby corner. It took a while for him to figure out how to wind his ribbon around the poles but once he got it, he just kept going round and round and round. Very cute to see him persistently dodging/stepping over the dangling ribbons and eventually getting himself tangled up in the colourful web.
He didn’t think it was so funny though – he had a momentary freak out when he couldn’t free himself and that was the end of our session :\ We did get a small ball of ribbon to bring home on our way out though.
We had heaps of fun. Go check it out if you haven't before it ends this weekend!

 | 10:52 am - Buzz cut I came home from work yesterday to Sean sporting a badly mangled buzz cut. My mother's handiwork - she blamed the uneven, jagged edges on his fidgeting and crying (from the itch). It doesn't look so bad in pictures but trust me, if you saw him in person, you'd think he cut his own hair!
As you can see, Sean didn't mind his new look so much ;)

Here's what he had to say about the episode: Me: Can you tell me who cut your hair today? S: Ah Po. Me: What did she cut your hair with? S: Scissors... and coomb. Ming-ming hair fall down.
Ugh, we need urgent remediation action this weekend!

 | 09:42 am - loving mornings like that..
peaceful. and no chance of a potential meltdown when I leave the house. that said, he woke bright and early, had loads of playtime and cuddles on my bed and stepped all over me while I desperately attempt to snooze in a few more futile winks. had his milk and vitamin feed and his breakfast of porridge plus the usual morning dose of his favourite YouTube phonics song and a web chat over Skype with my aunt in the US (who demands requests my son to report daily). all that, before he KO and went down for his nap. what a morning. and what? is it only 930am now? been clocking in 10-12hrs work days for the entire week and I'm pretty much zombified. can't wait for the weekend break before the madness start all over again next week. it's Friday people! can you smell the weekend already? give me a shout, if you are as excited about the weekend as I am and tell me how you are going to spend it.. i wanna gatecrash!! im joking! every weekend is a blessing when you have a kid. this weekend, I'm going to attend a bloggers workshop (woohoo!) and am going to spend the rest of it as playtime with kiddo (maybe take his car out and rev up the engine) and catch up on my sleep. hmm. can it be 9.30pm now already?!?!

 | 10:24 pm - Dissecting fishy
I have a flashdrive at work, that never fails to make me chuckle when I use it. It's in the shape of a fish, and the head is the "cap", that has to be pulled out to plug the drive into the USB port. Makes an incredibly cute image when it's plugged in!
Fishy dissected :p I couldn't resist sending these to the pals, having lots of fun coming up with captions. Heee. Just something random that I wanna remember and share. : ) Note: No fishes were harmed in the production of this post, live or otherwise. Posted via LiveJournal app for iPhone. Current Mood: silly

 | 11:37 pm - Parent-Teacher conference I went to my first ever parent-teacher conference at Sean's kindy yesterday. I was quite curious to hear what his teachers had to say about Sean – I know my little guy inside out but it is always interesting to hear what other people who see him on an almost daily basis think of him as well :)
His teachers were all smiles when they talked about him. Phew!
I didn't hear anything I didn't already know: ♥ They described him as sweet, cheerful, smart, independent and very active (active/energetic came up a lot). Gets along well with his classmates. His best friends are Othneil, Nathan and Gabriel (all boys) - he gets upset when they are absent. ♥ Can be quite rough when playing. Loves action figures (haha). ♥ A bit slower in speaking compared to his peers and take longer to pick up new words. His form teacher Mrs S said he used to grunt and tug her shirt to get her attention when he first started school but she has since taught him how to call her name and ask nicely. Now, he yells her first name all day long (haha). ♥ Enjoys hands-on activities and can concentrate on an activity for long stretches (I asked if he was disruptive in class - they said it was quite the contrary!). Insists on doing everything on his own. Often volunteers to do more than is required (I received quite a few double copies of artwork/worksheets of his). ♥ His Chinese teacher was surprised he knew many Mandarin phrases but he just doesn't speak in the language unless spoken to. ♥ Is picky with his food. Checks what is served at snack time everyday and only pipes up 'I want' if he wants some. Else, he will eat biscuits from his own snackbox. ♥ Has a very sensitive nose and sneezes very often. His teachers have taught him to ask if he needs help wiping his nose and to not blow his nose until they have the tissue ready ;) ♥ Is toilet-trained. When Mrs S coaxes him to pee during the break but he doesn't want to, he will tell her 'never come out'! He is also always the last kid to leave the toilet because he likes to check all the taps to make sure they are off. If he finds any still running, he will shout 'Shanti, Shanti, water, water! Waste water!' The teachers also displayed lots of pictures of the kids during the school term (too bad we couldn't bring them home but I did snap some pics). Sean is not of those chatty kids who come back from school with lots of stories to tell - I think he forgets most of what happened in school by the time he reaches home - so it was a huge treat being able to see for myself what he gets up to in school! I saw him do a little show-and-tell in front of his class (I like Kong-Kong. I like Mummy and Daddy. He never calls Foops 'Daddy' at home), play with water, make music with his friends, dance, paint with his hands, thread straws, listen to a story and learn the alphabets. Ahh, all so cute! The past half year of school has really done him a lot of good and I am very glad he is enjoying it :) My takeaway from the session: For the June hols (and possibly beyond), we will still do the usual reading/singing with him and in particular, we will work on helping him recognise his alphabets (they are up to letter j now). I may start introducing him to phonics (which is new to me too!).
I am guessing the reason why he is not speaking much is because there is no one to engage him in meaningful conversations at home in the day. (It is just my helper and my mum and they are usually busy with the baby/household chores.) So we will try to get him to speak up more on a daily basis. We are also going to make it a point to speak more Mandarin and build up his vocab (and mine!). I may look into signing him up for Mandarin classes. Any recommendations?
I want to stock up on more art and craft materials and create a conducive Montessori type activity corner for him to do hands-on type of activities. Lastly, we are also beginning to rethink our (okay, my) decision to not have a TV at home. I think it could really help him learn new things and brush up on his verbal skills. But - big but - we must really monitor his TV-watching (he will watch all day if we let him) if we do get one.

 | 08:37 am - farewell lunches.
farewell lunches are rather rampant these days. almost weekly, I hear news that someone is leaving. I know, its a fact of life. people come and go. it just gets a little harder to bear when its someone when you are quite pally with coreen (who is leaving), jasmine, Janna and myself. self-taken shot on my HTC one x. our food! we had lunch at one of my favourite restaurants, the little fish shop (greenwood fish bistro). I had 5 fresh oysters as starters and man.. its really a lot more worth it dining there for lunch. food from left to right, top down: clams in white wine and garlic fish and chips (house speciality!) vongole spaghetti (my lunch, and no.. I didn't.get seafood overload) seafood pasta in cream sauce (absolutely delish!) fresh oysters (my first love) spicy marinana linguine the lunch very much made up for the sadness I was feeling about losing yet another colleague. haha. my stomach rules. but, com'on.. I am absolutely thrilled at her determination at carving out a career for herself and she is one of the most focused, self-motivated individual that I know who constantly better herself with every ounce of energy she has and plans her time meticulously down to the seconds. ok. I exaggerated, but you get the drift. she's off to turning her part time job into a full time job in real estate so if any of you need a contact, let me know and I can pass you her contacts. you'll definitely be in good hands with her. us, and our lovely lunch. today marks her last day in the company, and while she'll be gone as a familiar sight in the office, I know I have a friend for keeps.

 | 11:25 pm - Incredible tales: The story of Lola
[back dated post] Mr Incredible knows that I'm quite the perfume freak, so he got me a new perfume for Christmas last year. The man had a vague recollection of what I had in my collection, but couldn't remember for sure. However, he had a pretty good grasp of my taste, and with the assistance of some very helpful professional advice, picked one out for me. I was floored - for the longest time I've steered away from scents with strong vanilla or musk notes, and it was only recently that I developed a liking for them. Been shopping for one that I fancied, but yet had not decided what I wanted. I didn't mention that I was browsing for a new scent. I don't know how he knew, but he did.
Marc Jacobs - Lola And this, was perfect. I was so amused that right before he passed me this gift, I was leaning towards a lighter version of this - Daisy, which had nearly identical notes but smelled a little "sweeter". Thing is, while I was rather sold on Daisy, couldn't help but feel that there was something amiss about it. And on trying out Lola, I had the "this is it!" moment. *love* And funnily enough, was chatting to Bestie about this and she squealed very loudly across cyberspace that this was also her latest favourite, which she had also very recently purchased. Ha! My life is full of lovely coincidences, indeed. ;) Posted via LiveJournal app for iPhone. Current Mood: amazed
